Aanvankelijk studeerde hij medicijnen, maar deze studie moest hij afbreken vanwege het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hij werd lid van de antifascistische verzetsgroep <em>Recht en Vrijheid<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Na de oorlog bezocht hij grote culturele steden als Rome en Parijs. Merz is vooral bekend om zijn iglo-achtige bouwsels \u2013 voor hem de elementaire behuizing van de nomadische mens in symbiose met de natuur. Mario Merz was de nestor van de <em>arte povera<\/em> beweging, waar installaties werden gemaakt met eenvoudige (\u2018arme\u2019) materialen.<\/p>\n<p>Merz had zijn eerste solotentoonstelling in 1954 in Turijn. In het begin van zijn carri\u00e8re maakte hij vooral schilderijen. Vanaf 1966 maakte hij ook werken waarin hij natuurlijke en gefabriceerde materialen met elkaar combineerde. Bekend is het <em>Che Fare?<\/em> \u2013 een schaal lasagne met deze letters in neonlicht.<\/p>\n<p>Met zijn iglo\u2019s onderzocht Merz de wetmatigheden van de natuur, waarbij hij vooral natuurlijke materialen als leisteen, bijenwas en jute gebruikte, in combinatie met glas, keramiek en neonlicht. Thema\u2019s als (wiskundige) herhaling en oneindigheid spelen in Merz\u2019 werk een belangrijke rol.<\/p>\n<p>In 1972, 1982 en 1992 nam Mario Merz deel aan <em>Documenta<\/em> (5, 7 en 9). De Bi\u00ebnnale van Veneti\u00eb toonde zijn werk in 1976. Het beeldenpark van het Kr\u00f6ller- M\u00fcller Museum in Otterlo en het Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht hebben beelden van Merz. Net als grote musea in de Verenigde Staten<\/p>\n<p>Mario Merz overleed in 2003. Tien jaar later was tijdens <a href=\"https:\/\/artzuid.nl\/en\/archive-artzuid\/artzuid-2013\/\">ARTZUID 2013<\/a> zijn installatie <em>74 gradini riappaiono in una crescita di geometria concentrica (74 stappen die opnieuw verschijnen in een geometrische concentrische groeivorm)<\/em> te zien. Het is een verzameling van acht iglo\u2019s met fundamenten van steen, van waaruit \u2018twijgen\u2019 van betonijzer ontspruiten.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner
