Hij studeerde schilderkunst in Perpignan en Parijs, waar hij het advies kreeg eerst een basisopleiding te volgen aan de <em>Ecole des Arts-D\u00e9coratifs<\/em>, voordat hij kon worden toegelaten tot de <em>Ecole des Beaux-Arts<\/em>. Schilderijen van Paul Gauguin en anderen maakten grote indruk op hem. Maillol sloot zich aan bij <em>Les Nabis<\/em>, die probeerde vernieuwing in de schilderkunst teweeg te brengen.<\/p>\n<p>Zijn grootste talent lag echter niet in de schilderkunst; hij ging wandtapijten ontwerpen en startte een tapijtweverij aan huis. Die moest hij noodgedwongen opgeven door een oogziekte die hij had opgelopen door het weefwerk. Hij ging terug naar Parijs en volgde een opleiding beelden maken. Eerst in terracotta, later in hout, klei en brons. Zijn eerste belangrijke beeldhouwwerk maakte hij in 1902, naar model van zijn vrouw, Clothilde.<\/p>\n<p>Tot het einde van zijn leven bleef Maillol trouw aan traditionele technieken en materialen. Net als zijn thematiek: dat van het vrouwelijk naakt. De klassieke oudheid vormt een belangrijke bron van inspiratie, net als <a href=\"https:\/\/artzuid.nl\/en\/artzuid-artists\/august-rodin\/\">August Rodin.<\/a> Toen hij zijn eigen neoclassicistische stijl had gevonden, heeft hij die nauwelijks nog veranderd. Zijn beelden zijn zonder uitzondering glad gepolijst. De massiviteit van de vormen staat de elegantie, beweeglijkheid en zinnelijkheid niet in de weg.<\/p>\n<p>Dat geldt ook voor <em>La Rivi\u00e8re \u2013 edition epreuve d\u2019exposition<\/em>, een van Maillols topwerken dat in <a href=\"https:\/\/artzuid.nl\/en\/archive-artzuid\/artzuid-2019\/\">2019 op ARTZUID<\/a> werd getoond. De vrouwenfiguur lijkt te kronkelen, als het water in een rivier.<\/p>\n<p>In de grote kunstmusea en in de openbare ruimte zijn Maillols werken te zien. In veel Franse steden, in Middelheim (Antwerpen), Kr\u00f6ller-M\u00fcller (Otterlo) en Helmond staan zijn beelden.<\/p>\n<p>Aristide Maillol overleed in 1944 ten gevolge van een
