About David Annesley

David Annesley is an English sculptor best known for his brightly coloured sculptures of geometric figures. After two years of service as a pilot in the Royal Air Force, he began studying painting at St. Martins School of Art in 1958. Over time, however, he became more interested in sculpture and began taking classes at the same academy with the well-known British sculptor Anthony Caro. In 1965 he participated in the exhibition The New Generation at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Here the work of a new generation of sculptors who had in common their studies at St. Martins School of Art was shown. These artists used new materials such as fiberglass, aluminium, and plastic. They also removed traditional pedestals by putting their works directly on the ground surface. The sculptures were often given a brightly coloured coat of paint, giving a new ‘skin’ and drawing attention away from the material originally used. The open geometric shapes in Annesley’s metal sculptures convey a sense of weightlessness, making them refer to the experience of being a pilot in the RAF. The dynamic compositions, made up of triangles and circles, at times in combination with wavy lines, evoke a sense of movement. This dynamic is enhanced by his use of vibrant colours. As a result, Annesley tries to bridge the traditional dividing line between painting and sculpture in his works. Not only because of his initial training as a painter, but certainly also because of his friendship with the American Colorfield artist Kenneth Noland, who died in 2010.
