About Sita Bandringa

Sita Bandringa started her career as a pottery artist. A trip on the Orient Express in the mid-1970s brought her to Japan, where she became acquainted with ceramic culture. Later she made trips to Korea and China, which increased her knowledge and experience further. In the 1980s she switched to other materials and made larger works. Since then, steel, aluminum, bronze, and various plastics have formed the basis of her sculptures. In this, too, influences from the Far East are recognizable. 

During ARTZUID 2021, her wings were set up on the Minervalaan, they are normally positioned on a roundabout in Assen, the place where Sita Bandringa grew up and still lives and works. The beginning of Wings was a butterfly shape, she made the sculpture for a pond. Bandringa used transparent acrylic and covered part with a holographic layer. When sunlight falls on it, the entire color spectrum is reflected. In 2004 the sculpture was voted the most beautiful sculpture in Assen by the readers of the ‘Dagblad van het Noorden’. 

It has been found that steel, an ironically heavy material, reflects a lightness due to its sparkling colors. The sculpture is not transparent, but due to its open shape, the daylight and sunlight have free play. As if gravity ceases to exsist. 

In de jaren 80 stapte ze over op andere materialen en maakte ze grotere werken. Sindsdien vormen staal, aluminium, brons en uiteenlopende kunststoffen de basis van haar beelden. Ook hierin zijn invloeden uit het Verre Oosten herkenbaar.

Tijdens ARTZUID 2021 stonden op de Minervalaan haar Vleugels opgesteld, die normaal gesproken op een rotonde in Assen staan, de plaats waar Sita Bandringa groot werd en nog altijd woont en werkt. Het begin van Vleugels was een vlindervorm. De sculptuur maakte ze voor een vijver. Bandringa gebruikte transparant acrylaat en bekleedde een deel met een holografisch laag. Wanneer daar zonlicht op valt, wordt het complete kleurenspectrum weerkaatst. In 2004 werd het sculptuur door de lezers van het Dagblad van het Noorden uitgeroepen tot mooiste beeld van Assen.

Het is gebleken dat staal, zwaar materiaal, door de sprankelende kleuren, een lichtheid weergeven. Het beeld is niet transparant, maar door de open vorm heeft het dag- en zonlicht vrij spel. Alsof de zwaartekracht een beetje wordt opgeheven.
