About Margot Berkman
Margot Berkman is fascinated by the interaction between man and nature. Her sculptures balance on the edge of dream and reality, where memories mingle with the whispers of nature, especially the underwater world. Since 2011, the pollution of the oceans has played an important role in Berkman’s oeuvre; with works of art in public spaces, she draws attention to climate change and rising sea levels. ‘In my work I try to create moments of tranquillity in which the viewer can briefly detach himself from everyday reality’, says Berkman. At ARTZUID she is showing her new work Seaweed-Skeleton nr. 8 (The Remains of a Former Kelp Forest). The sculpture’s five upward-winding arms are an existential cry for help. The sculpture brings the transience of life in the ocean to the surface of our consciousness and is both an ode and a warning.
