About Britte Koolen
Koolen is known for her minimalist installations and wall sculptures. In a future dominated by speed, haste and the constant urge for ‘more’, Britte seeks the opposite in her work: the small, the subtle and the inconspicuous. Amid the overwhelming noise of daily life, she tries to create moments of silence and contemplation with her sculptures. It is an invitation to discover the essence, to find a strength in simplicity that is not always visible.
During ARTZUID, Koolen’s recent work De eerste stappen can be seen. The sculpture was made as part of the BUILD! project for the Lage Weide business park. The contrasts within Lage Weide formed the starting point for her research into concrete. The material is often synonymous with strength and durability but becomes more vulnerable when cast in slender shapes. The sculpture explores the boundaries of this paradox. The sculpture The First Steps invites us to reflect on the hidden softness of an environment, and on the delicate balance between strength and vulnerability that lies within everything.
