About Carla Rump

Carla Rump is a figurative sculptor who studied at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. She makes her sculptures from wood, stone, and bronze. Carla’s fascination for sculpture started at a young age. She remembers that as a small child she walked with her mother through the centre of Hilversum accompanied by her mother to the most beautiful place in the village. Right in the centre was a bronze sculpture of a small horse. The rear of the horse had become shiny from the many touches. She was lifted onto the statue and was suddenly elevated to eye level with the world. At that moment she felt herself at the centre of the universe. The feeling that sculpture gave her has never left her. Nature has been an important source of inspiration for her from an early age and that certainly applies to the soul and power of trees. They represent the fragility of man and act as the lungs of the earth with which they literally provide us air. Rump sees sketching in wood as a conversation with the tree. With her wooden sculptures she gives the tree a second life. The dialogue with nature is also reflected in her sculpture Embrace with elf benches. The fairy-tale fungal structure is created by natural processes on the wood. Rump herself describes this as: “Decay in all its fragility. Matter and creation go hand in hand.” Rump has already made various works for the public space. Her bronze sculpture Grenzeloos, a Fiat 500 with a lady on the roof, is a real crowd favourite in Geldrop.
