About Helen Vergouwen
Helen Vergouwen creates purely geometric abstract sculptures in corten steel. She admires colleagues who, like her, work in a geometric abstract way and can meticulously implement conceptually chosen starting points, such as Agnes Martin or Ad Dekkers. She herself chooses an intuitive working method, that is her nature. Her ideas come to paper as sketches and dreams. She can already see the sculpture in front of her, but not yet the precise dimensions and shapes that it should ultimately have. The certainty about thickness, format and proportions arises during the working process. While looking and weighing, she adjusts details and refines her starting point until the sculpture has been created that she is 100% convinced of. It is perhaps no coincidence that Vergouwen lived in Gorinchem for a while; a city that gained fame in the seventies as the cradle of innovative abstract art. At ARTZUID 2025, Vergouwen presents two sculptures entitled #639 and #642.
