About Ilse Oelbers
Oelbers’ work is characterised by an in-depth exploration of human emotions and situations, inviting the viewer to reflect on the stories and experiences of the figures depicted. During ARTZUID 2025, her work No Return will be on display: a life-size sculpture from 2022, depicting an old woman carrying her belongings. She looks beyond the horizon with seemingly unseeing eyes, emphasising the vulnerability and uncertainty of her situation. Oelbers: ‘What is today can change forever tomorrow. And then we will gather our belongings and leave. Away from where home is for us.’ This sculpture is the first in a series in which Oelbers examines the fragile position of humanity. The work symbolises the uncertain future of people who are forced to leave their homes.
