About Maja van Hall
Her intimate sculpture Relatie Mens-Water shows two figures holding each other as if in a budding embrace. Their legs and knees sprout from two large shells. Is it a rebirth, in which two people meet again? Maja van Hall, educated at the Rijksakademie and the Hague Art Academy, has a very broad thematic oeuvre. In addition to deeply human reflections, her sculptures also show features of playfulness and humour. In terms of execution, she remains mainly faithful to the sculptural tradition of forms in wax, clay and plaster and their transfer to bronze or polyester. Her surfaces often remain rough and sketchy. The pushing and scraping, so characteristic of the sculptor’s working process, may remain visible. Van Hall took hesitant steps towards abstraction, but in essence she has always continued to prioritisefiguration and the personal in her work.
