About Marjolein Witte

Marjolein Witte studied at the Utrecht School of the Arts. She uses various artforms such as painting, installation, photography, and film. Her work is characterized by colour explosions, geometric shapes, large angular installations, and plant confetti.

Her oeuvre revolves around the personal question: “How do I take up space?” Years ago, Witte received the comment that she could make herself invisible and this was the start of her search for the answer to the above question. This research has taken her beyond territorial expressions such as yard boundaries and warning sounds to a place of full expressive freedom. The starting point of her search was her stay as an artist in residence in Northern Germany. This experience resulted in filmed self-portraits, a personal route through her environment, visualized in a series of paintings of the defined territory of the residence’s garden.

Her sculpture Seduction can be seen during ARTZUID 2023. This is a follow-up to the sculpture Evolution that Witte made in 2019 for the exhibition Masterful Women in Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. By making robust, bold, and strikingly coloured geometric constructions, Witte investigates how we as a group or individual take up space and try to bend the world to our liking. The need to be seen is at the core of our existence. We look for confirmation of our identity in the family, in a relationship, at work, in society and in the wider world. This also happens in the animal kingdom, but humans have most prominently devised all sorts of ways to stand out and take their place through various sensory means. On a micro level, it is the artist here who tries to assert her place in the art scene.

Marjolein Witte has participated in many exhibitions in recent years and her work has been included among others in the AkzoNobel Art Foundation collection.
