About Marjolijn Mandersloot

Marjolijn Mandersloot and Hans van Wezel were trained at the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven. They have known each other since their primary school days in Veldhoven and have been making sculptures together under one name for quite some time. Characteristic of their oeuvre is their use of abstract animal figures that show human traits. Body posture and material expression create unique characters that do not leave the viewer unmoved. They evoke ambiguous feelings of recognition and wonder. Letting adults look almost with the curious look of a child. What we see is not what it seems. Seemingly cuddly softness turns out to be robust bronze or polished aluminium. This play of tactile confusion and the blurring of boundaries between imagination and reality gives their work a humorous undertone.

The oeuvre of Marjolijn Mandersloot consists of free work and assignments. An example the co-creation with luxury fashion house Hermès in Paris, for which they make high-quality leather objects at the intersection of art, design, and craft. For parks and squares they realize monumental sculpture groups such as 2 Dogs (Amsterdam), Badgasten (Hengelo), Googling (Schiedam) and For the lions (Maastricht). They know how to play the public space in such a way that it seems as if we are stepping into a scene. Interaction is key to this work. The sculptures therefore stand on the floor without a pedestal, inviting equal encounters.

The work Soulmate that can be seen during ARTZUID 2023 dates from 2017 and was cast in bronze this year after which it was provided with a bright blue coating. With its head high and ears pricked up, the two-meter-tall dog sniffs curiously at the city. This advanced teenager has come to hang out for a while. He looks nonchalant in his rumpled, oversized outfit. Open to good company. Where are his mates?
