About Hieke Luik
Hieke Luik develops her sculptures around that unstoppable principle of growth and energy. She lets the elements flow naturally from her hands and later stiffen in bronze. Despite the material, her sculptures retain that soft, almost limp and vulnerable principle, which symbolises the blossoming of life. Her work is about the process of fertility. The cycle of germination, growth, maturity, decay, death and return forms the common thread. This cycle can be read again and again in her work as a sculpted thought process. ARTZUID is taking care of her sculpture Zaaddrager, which is on loan from the municipality of Almere. The figure resembles an animal that drags itself along. It carries a bunch of swinging balls, as if they were ovary seeds that urgently need to be brought to safety. With the sense of heaviness that she expresses here, Hieke Luik touches on the concern for the survival of endangered species. A commitment that can also be experienced as a subtle form of activism.
